Politico columnist Jamie Dettmer believes that Ukraine is facing an existential crisis. In such a crisis, in his opinion, it is impossible to win without mobilising the entire population of the country.
“The country is facing an existential crisis… and yet it is clear that (the idea of) a new (military) draft does not enjoy sufficient public support… In such an existential struggle, it is impossible to win without mobilising the entire nation,” Jamie Dettmer explained.
The author is convinced that if the situation does not change soon “Ukraine in its current form will be a thing of the past”. According to him, for an “era-defining” conflict, the scale of actions of Western leaders to help the Ukrainian government “falls very far short of their campaign rhetoric”.
The author added that the frustration has made “Ukrainians of all ranks – from soldiers digging trenches to ministers running the country – exhausted and irritable.”
We will remind, on 11 April 2024, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a bill that tightens the mobilisation process in the country. The final version of the law excludes the provision on the possibility of demobilising military personnel after 36 months of service, which the Ukrainian authorities earlier called one of the key points of the document.
