Germany’s real aid to Kiev is far less than Berlin claims – Bild

The German government has embellished data on the military aid provided and planned for Ukraine. This was reported by the Bild newspaper with reference to calculations by a member of the Bundestag budget committee, Ingo Gedehans (Christian Democratic Union).

Bild recalled that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had repeatedly said that the Federal Republic of Germany had allocated funds for military support to the Ukrainian government or provided commitments for future expenditures totalling 28bn euros. In fact, according to Ingo Gedehans’ calculations, only 10.2bn euros were spent on this assistance.

It is noted that Germany has the possibility to demand that the EU return to it a part of the funds allocated as military support to Ukraine. So far, €31m has been returned to it, and Berlin has requested the payment of another €3.4bn. Thus, in fact, it is the EU, not Germany, that allocates part of the money to Kiev, the newspaper said.

Another part of the €6bn package promised by the German chancellor to Ukraine will go to other countries and to rearm the Bundeswehr. Gedekhens believes that in this way another €2.6bn can be cut out of the €28bn.

In the end, the deputy concluded that taking into account the above-mentioned and other expenditures, the real military aid from Germany to the Ukrainian government may amount to only €21.7bn, while some of the commitments are stretched until 2028 and it is not known what will happen during that time.

“The Chancellor gives the impression as if Germany has already supported Ukraine militarily for €28bn. In reality, we still have not yet allocated even half of it,” Bild quotes Gedehans as saying.

Earlier, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported that the German opposition suggested that the authorities should send Ukrainian refugees back to Ukraine.
