Schröder urged Scholz’s party to develop a peace plan for Ukraine

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper expressed the opinion that the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) should be more active in working out diplomatic options for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.

In his opinion, not only Germany but also France should be in favour of peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I am firmly convinced that Putin is also interested in this,” Schröder said.

In March, Schröder did not rule out his role as a mediator on Ukraine.

Later, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on Schröder’s remarks, said that personal communication between the leaders of the countries helped resolve complex issues with other states.
