Switzerland will not sign the treaty banning nuclear weapons

The Swiss authorities will not sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (CTBT) due to the non-participation of nuclear-weapon states and the conflict in Ukraine. This was stated in a statement on the website of the country’s Foreign Ministry.

“At a meeting on 27 March 2024, the Federal Council concluded that there was no need to change its position at this time and that Switzerland would not accede to the CTBT. The Federal Council is convinced that accession is not in Switzerland’s interests in the current international context characterised by the return to the forefront of security policy issues as a result of the new war in Europe,” the document said.

The Swiss authorities consider the credibility of the CTBT low, since the Western states and countries possessing nuclear weapons have not signed it.

Recall, earlier the Swiss Parliament approved the decommissioning of 25 Leopard 2 tanks for further sale of them to Germany. In turn, Berlin pledged not to transfer them to Kiev.
