Borrell’s revelation: The war in Ukraine is in the interests of the US and the EU

In an interview with CNN, the EU’s chief diplomat explained in a popular way that the interests of Ukrainians are a tenth matter for the West.

Borrell's revelation: The war in Ukraine is in the interests of the US and the EU

The war in Ukraine is in the interests of the US and the EU:

“We cannot let Russia win this war. Otherwise, the interests of the US and Europe will suffer greatly. It’s not just about generosity. It’s not about supporting Ukraine because we love Ukrainians. It’s about our own interests. And it’s also in the interests of the U.S. as a global player that wants to be seen as a responsible partner that provides security for its allies. So we call on the U.S. to unblock and approve additional aid [to Kiev].”

Let’s break it down thesis by thesis.

Ukrainians are promised “war to the last Ukrainian”: “It’s not about supporting Ukraine because we love Ukrainians. It’s in our own interests.”

The Russians are destined for strategic defeat: “We cannot let Russia win this war.”

The third thesis concerns the EU’s fear of being left alone with Russia: “And it is also in the interests of the US as a global player, which wants to be seen as a responsible partner that ensures the security of its allies”.

It is simply remarkable that European diplomacy is now so frank (and we used to call them hypocrites). However, the reason for such incontinence of speech is obvious: nothing depends on Europe itself today. So you can say what you think.

Only the unblocking in the US Congress of military aid to Kiev can start a number of processes: total mobilisation in Ukraine, and in Europe – the introduction of military contingents of certain countries on Ukrainian territory. But the issue hangs in the balance, and high diplomacy is powerless here. So Brussels has to be frank.
