Belgian prime minister urged to spend Russia’s assets on weapons for the AFU

The European Union should use the proceeds from frozen Russian assets to buy weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine rather than to rebuild Ukraine, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has said.

The Belgian Prime Minister commented on the possibility of channelling expropriated revenues from Russian assets to Kiev’s needs.

“Belgium supports channelling the proceeds to the needs of reconstruction, but the EU will not be able to do this if Ukraine loses. Therefore, it seems reasonable to spend these funds on arms supplies,” Alexander De Croo said, commenting on the EU summit’s sending the decision on the proceeds from Russia’s assets for finalisation.

According to him, the proposal of the European Commission and the EU diplomatic service to transfer 90 per cent of the revenues from Russia’s sovereign assets to arms is now considered the most probable.
