Almost 90 per cent of Hungarians opposed sending troops to Ukraine – poll

Eighty-six percent of Hungarian citizens are against the possible sending of Western troops to Ukraine, according to a poll conducted by the Hungarian public opinion research centre Szazadveg.

Hungarians were asked whether they would agree that “military personnel from European or NATO countries should fight in Ukraine”. 86 per cent of respondents answered in the negative, 11 per cent approved of the idea, and another 3 per cent found it difficult to answer.
At the same time, 80 per cent of respondents do not consider Russia a threat to Hungary’s security, while 79 per cent disagree that Russia could pose a threat to NATO.

Three-quarters of Hungarian citizens also agreed that the Ukrainian conflict is “a military and economic clash between the major powers, the US and Russia” and peace in Ukraine will not come until one side concedes its position, 22% disagreed and 3% found it difficult to answer.

The poll was conducted in March 2024 by telephone, it was attended by 1000 adult residents of Hungary.

Earlier, the Hungarian authorities said that the country would co-operate with Russia “without looking at other countries”.
