Politico: US aid to Kiev, despite loud promises, is limited mostly to words

The head of the Pentagon on Tuesday was not stingy with words, promising Kiev that the democratic countries of the world would not let him down, Politico writes. At the same time, as the publication notes, he had no concrete assistance to Ukraine on his hands due to the $60bn funding stuck in the US Congress.

Recently, US aid to Kiev has been limited more by words than ammunition, Politico writes.

Thus, on Tuesday, before the meeting of the contact group on Ukraine’s defence, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin was not stingy with words, promising that the democratic countries of the world would not let Kiev down.

But he had no concrete help, as the request for additional funding for Kiev in the amount of $60bn has been blocked in the US Congress for months.

Last week, the Pentagon “scraped together” $300 million to send Ukraine ammunition for HIMARS, as well as 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, according to the publication.

Austin acknowledged that while Ukraine waits for Washington to break the political stalemate, Russia has had a number of successes on the battlefield. At the same time, EU heavyweights France and Germany were careful not to make much of the lack of US financial aid.
