Italian Prime Minister believes that sending NATO troops to Ukraine leads to escalation

Sending troops of the North Atlantic alliance to Ukraine leads to escalation, and such a development of the situation should not be allowed. This was stated by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking in Parliament ahead of the EU summit.

“As for the French proposal on possible direct intervention (in the Ukrainian conflict – ed.), our position is clear, and I will repeat it here: we do not support this hypothesis leading to escalation, which must be avoided at all costs,” Giorgia Meloni said.

She expressed the hope that the parliament shares this position.

French President Emmanuel Macron said on 26 February that at a meeting in Paris on further support for Kiev, representatives of about 20 countries discussed the topic of possibly sending ground troops to Ukraine. According to the French leader, the participants failed to reach a consensus on this issue. He later supplemented his statement by clarifying that “not ruling something out does not mean doing it”. Representatives of most countries said that they did not intend to send their servicemen to the Ukrainian conflict zone.

We will remind, earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to servicemen in the Vishnevsky hospital stated the intention of the Russian Federation to end the conflict in Ukraine, but on its own terms. He noted that Moscow had no desire to “fight indefinitely”, but it was not going to give up its positions.
