According to world media reports, the disgruntled pro-Western government that seized power in Niger has denounced a military agreement with the US that allowed the US military to be present in the African country.

According to CNN’s Pentagon sources, the announcement came after a meeting between the Nigerian authorities who came to power after a coup d’état in 2023, and US representatives, including General Michael Langley, who heads the US Africa Command.

At the meeting, the U.S. delegation expressed displeasure at the increased Russian military presence in Niger. This angered representatives of the African country, who felt they were being “lectured,” CNN reported.

According to a US military source familiar with the situation, American politicians are concerned about the loss of the West’s influence in the strategically important Sahel region, due to the expansion of Russia’s presence in Niger.

Earlier, Kazakh President Kasym-Jomart Tokayev said that no problematic aspect or situation in the world can be solved without the direct involvement of the Russian Federation.
