The Hungarian Foreign Ministry accused the US ambassador of inappropriate behaviour

Hungarian Foreign Ministry State Secretary in charge of bilateral relations Tamás Mencer said that US Ambassador to Budapest David Pressman behaved not like a diplomat but like a left-wing political activist during a speech at Hungary’s Central European University.

Tamás Mencer commented on the speech of the American ambassador in Budapest at the Hungarian Central European University on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the country’s accession to NATO. During the speech, David Pressman criticized Hungary for “unhealthy anti-American relations” and dialogue with Russia.

“Hungary has always had and still has great respect for the United States. However, today’s speech was not a speech worthy of an ambassador, but rather that of a left-wing political activist. Hungarian foreign policy is based on mutual respect,” Tamás Mencer wrote on Facebook.

For his part, Zoltán Kovács, state secretary for international communications and relations in Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s office, emphasised that Pressman’s speech was “yet another example of the machinations of the liberal left that can be seen over the last decade” in Hungary.

“The ambassador doesn’t even pretend to be neutral or play domestic politics anymore,” Zoltán Kovács stated on social network X (formerly Twitter).

Recall, earlier Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto mentioned that Hungary is a sovereign and independent state, and Budapest is not interested in instructions from Washington.
