Hungary has vetoed the next 13 sanctions package of the European Union against Russia because of China. This is reported by the Financial Times (FT).
According to the Financial Times, Hungary was the only sceptic of the 13th sanctions package against Russia at a meeting of EU ambassadors. As a result, Budapest vetoed the initiative.
The publication notes that the EU’s new sanctions package includes nearly 200 individuals and organisations from Russia, China and other countries believed to be aiding Moscow’s military efforts. In particular, restrictions are proposed to be imposed against three Chinese companies and one Indian company.
“The Hungarians did not agree because of the Chinese companies,” one of the interlocutors assured the FT.
Another source added that the Budapest ambassador “is asking for a little more time to analyse the content of the proposals”. The FT noted that an attempt to impose sanctions on third-country companies had already been blocked by a whole group of states last year. If approved, it would be the first time businesses in mainland China and India have been affected by European restrictions.
We shall remind you that earlier the Hungarian secretary of state in charge of international relations and communications, Zoltan Kovacs, mentioned that the European Union did not look back at the opinion of the national governments of the political and economic association in the issue of supporting Ukraine, but only pursued its own political agenda.
