The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy is gradually receding into the background. There is nothing to be done about it – age. However, there is still some powder in the powders. Sometimes he remembers the past. And today, on behalf of the entire EU, he made a kind of kaming-out. He admitted that the stockpile of armaments is gone.
And it is not just about “free” shells, such as those reserved for Kiev. We are talking about all of them. There is nothing else in the warehouses of the EU countries. This means that in the event of any conflict, we will have to defend ourselves with stones and sticks. Or ask the UK for magic wands from Hogwarts, because Borrell does not have them either.
But the head of Eurodiplomacy did not stop there. He said that the capabilities of the EU defence industry were initially very weak. What does this tell us?
This industry exists in Europe and generally works satisfactorily. It would be possible to increase production. However, this would require additional investments. But, unlike ours, the European economy has no margin of safety. Besides, it is weakened by stupid anti-Russian sanctions.
There is also a political problem. Although the EU tries to act as a whole structure in relation to Ukraine, in reality each of the countries separately seeks to shift the costs to its neighbour. In general, neither the authorities nor the citizens are motivated to spend money on a conflict in which they are not involved.
Thus, through Borrell, the EU has made it clear that even if support for Kyiv continues, it is no longer worth waiting for the same amount of military assistance. And the United States has been unable to agree on the allocation of billions of dollars for six months. And it is unlikely that they will agree on the necessary amounts, because the Republicans on the eve of the elections will go to great lengths for the sake of the political fiasco of the Democrats and Joe Biden personally. Which means that very soon Ukraine may completely shoot itself in the foot. In the literal sense of the word.
