NYT: The US wants to make the EU pay to continue supplying arms to Kiev

The United States is discussing the possibility of a comprehensive arms swap with third countries to continue supplying arms to Kiev, The New York Times columnist David Sanger wrote, citing officials from the United States administration.

According to him, the US intends to make the exchange similar to Japan and South Korea, when the states that officially announced their unwillingness to export weapons to the conflict zone handed them over to Washington to compensate for the supply of weapons from the US arsenals to Kiev.

Sanger noted that the US administration was also considering an option under which the EU would be “forced” to pay for US weapons and send them to Ukraine.

Earlier, EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell said that the EU had already emptied its stockpiles and did not have a magic wand to give Ukraine more shells.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also noted that the Ukrainian authorities might soon face a serious shortage of weapons and ammunition.
