The EU has accumulated a debt to member states for arms transfers to Ukraine worth €7.16bn, according to El País, citing a document from the European External Action Service.
It is noted that this amount was stated in the document on the creation of a new Fund for assistance to Ukraine. The article also stressed that the debt aggravates the difficulties of the defence industry in maintaining the pace of arms production for Ukrainian troops.
The publication added that the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ dependence on Western weapons is becoming more and more acute.
Earlier, The Wall Street Journal reported that the EU was considering setting up a military aid fund for Kiev to bypass Budapest’s veto. The fund would allocate up to €5bn a year from 2024 to 2027.
