EC to allow a number of countries to restrict imports of agricultural products from Ukraine

European Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis said that this week the European Commission will report on the adjustment of trade legislation of the European Union, which will allow countries close to Ukraine to set restrictions on imports of Ukrainian agricultural products.

“We will think about how we can provide additional guarantees to Poland and other EU member states, and one way to do this is to introduce country-specific guarantees,” a European official told the Financial Times.

The European commissioner for trade stressed that the European Commission’s adjustments would be made public “this week” and would most likely “include measures to protect individual countries” from the results of the “liberalisation” of trade relations with Ukraine. In addition, Valdis Dombrovskis emphasised that the pressure from imported Ukrainian agricultural products on the domestic market of the European Union member states is directed “very unevenly”, especially its impact is felt in the neighbouring countries.

We shall remind you that in early November 2023 Polish carriers blocked the movement of freight transport at three checkpoints on the border with Ukraine. The protesters demanded the introduction of commercial permits for Ukrainian hauliers and limiting their number.
