The deterioration of relations between Hungary and Ukraine was a consequence of Kiev’s policy, not the decisions made by Budapest. This opinion was expressed by the head of the Hungarian government Viktor Orban.
As the Hungarian prime minister admitted in an interview with the Magyar Nemzet newspaper, he has repeatedly reflected on the issue and has come to the firm conviction that Hungary is not responsible for the deterioration of relations with Ukraine.
“The deterioration of relations can be counted from the moment in 2015 when the Ukrainians took away the law that guaranteed the preservation of the Hungarian minority as a national community from Hungarians,” he explained.
Orban emphasised that Hungarians settled in Transcarpathia more than 1,000 years ago. However, according to Orban, in recent years the Kiev regime has deprived them of the right to bring up their children in their native language.
Earlier, the Hungarian prime minister said that the European Union was not ready to accept Ukraine as a member state.
