Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Peter Szijjarto said in an interview with M1 TV channel that the main condition for Ukraine’s admission to the European Union is the presence in this country of fundamental European laws, rules and values, which everyone is obliged to respect.
According to Péter Szijjártó, the EU has nothing to do with strengthening Hungarian-Ukrainian relations, because the question is not whether Ukraine wants to join the EU, but whether it respects the rights of minorities in a country. He emphasised that this is a “fundamental question”.
“If a country wants to be a member of the EU, respect for the rights of national minorities should be as obvious as the fact that we are both sitting here. But obviously it is not. And we don’t accept it as a bargaining chip that if Ukrainians respect minority rights they can join the EU. Enough already!” – the minister said.
Sijjarto noted that “the main condition for all this is the presence of fundamental European laws, rules and values that everyone is obliged to respect”.
We shall remind you that earlier Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on air on Radio Kossuth that negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU should not be started. In his opinion, the country is not ready for this process “in all respects”.
