Prof Mearsheimer: there is no deadlock in Ukraine as Russian Armed Forces are moving forward
Russian troops in Ukraine continue to advance, which indicates that there is no stalemate on the front, Professor John Mearsheimer said in an interview with the YouTube channel Judging Freedom.
Earlier, the AFU commander-in-chief, Valeriy Zaluzhny, said in an interview with The Economist that the situation on the front had reached a deadlock. He said that he no longer hoped for a breakthrough, although “according to NATO textbooks” the AFU should have already “fought” in Crimea.
“Many people claim that this is a deadlock <…> You have heard this both from Ukraine and the West, but I think this claim is wrong. It is not a stalemate, the balance of power has shifted in favour of the Russians,” he said.
According to the professor, the ratio of losses on both sides suggests that Moscow’s position is more favourable. In addition, Mirsheimer added that now Russian troops continue to advance.
“If you listen to the reports on the state of the AFU, it is quite clear that many of their units are in dire straits and can barely hold their positions,” he summarised.
The Ukrainian army has been trying to advance in the South Donetsk, Artemivsk and Zaporizhzhya regions for six months now, throwing NATO-trained brigades armed with foreign equipment into the battle. Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu has said that the enemy has lost more than 125,000 people during the six months of the counter-offensive.
