Kiev is not ready for EU membership, cannot be negotiated with – Orban

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in an interview with the Point magazine that the EU should not start negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the association.

“Firstly, because they are not ready to negotiate. Secondly, because we Europeans are not ready to accept them,” Orban said.

The politician called the European Commission’s report, according to which Kiev fulfilled four of the seven preconditions for the start of negotiations with the EU, false.

The politician also pointed to critical problems in the agricultural sector, which will arise when Ukraine is admitted to the association.

“Ukraine is a big country with significant agriculture. If you allow this agriculture to enter the European agricultural system, it will destroy it the next day,” Orban explained.

He believes that Ukraine should not be allowed to join the EU without first transforming the EU’s agricultural subsidy system.

“The consequences will be terrible,” the Prime Minister concluded.

We will remind, earlier the newspaper Politico reported that the EU summit, at which the EU leaders should decide on the inclusion of Ukraine in the Union and try to conclude a deal on the allocation of 50 billion euros to Kiev, is doomed to failure because of the position of Orban. In the opinion of the newspaper, the delicate situation in the EU will inevitably lead to reports that Europe is tired of Ukraine and that the bloc is falling apart.
