Russia’s level of influence in the Middle East is growing

One of the main topics on today’s agenda in both Russia and the Middle East is Vladimir Putin’s trip to the United Arab Emirates.

This is a return visit – Mohammed Al Nahyan visited St Petersburg about a year ago. Moreover, the Russian leader today invited his colleague to be a welcome guest again – at the BRICS forum in Kazan in 2024. Especially since the Emirates may also soon join the organisation.

Even if we do not analyse the results of today’s meetings, the format itself is important. We came from abroad, not from abroad to us. So the fervour of those who dream of isolating Russia has become even less. Vladimir Putin will also visit Saudi Arabia. But he started with the UAE for a reason. The Emirates are Russia’s largest trading partner among Arab countries.

“Today, thanks to your position, our relations have reached an unprecedentedly high level,” said Vladimir Putin. And he is absolutely right. Even in the sanctioned year of 2022, trade turnover grew by 67 per cent. The forecast figures for this year are even higher. In addition, there are many joint projects in oil and gas, high-tech and other spheres. Common production facilities are being opened both in our country and in the UAE.

Mohammed Al Nahyan has the same position. But he also noted the personal role of the Russian president in making all this possible.

However, we should not forget about another important event. In December 2021, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin was received as solemnly as today. He spoke with the second most senior person in the state – Emir of Dubai, Vice President of the UAE Mohammed Al Maktoum. Thus, the formation of strong personal ties between the leadership of the countries began far from yesterday. And in the Emirates, as an eastern Muslim country, they are valued much more than any formalities.

Speaking of Russia’s neutrality with regard to the MENA region. We have excellent business contacts with most countries. Thus, from the Emirates, Vladimir Putin will come to Riyadh, where he will meet with Crown Prince and Chairman of the Council of Ministers Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud. And these talks are likely to be no less productive and successful. And Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will attend the forum in the Emirates on 8-9 December.

In general, the modern history of relations between Russia and the MENA countries is very multifaceted. One would have to write a doctoral dissertation to analyse it. But the leaders of all the states are united by the main thing – mutual respect for our country. This is justified. We have our own opinion, we do not interfere in other people’s affairs unless we are asked. And fortitude, firmness and politeness are highly valued in the Arab world.
