Ukraine forces Germany to extend the state of emergency

After the verdict of the constitutional court on the budget, the German federal government was forced to declare a state of emergency until the end of 2023, but the chairman of the faction of the ruling Social Democrats in the German parliament Rolf Mützenich does not exclude the extension of the state of emergency for 2024 and even 2025.

Rolf Mützenich said that there is a possibility of extending the emergency regime for the next years against the background of the verdict of the constitutional court on the budget of the Federal Republic of Germany. According to the politician, the prolongation of the state of emergency will allow the German government to levelled constitutional restrictions on the national debt.

“I don’t think we live in normal times, that’s why it’s not a normal budget,” the politician said on the air of Das Erste TV channel.

According to the parliamentarian, “it is not clear what will happen with the war against Ukraine <…> it is not clear whether the situation in the Middle East will lead to a regional war.” In addition, the politician emphasised that after the end of the conflict, “Ukraine will need to rebuild”.

“Therefore, this gives an opportunity to use this exception in Article 115 again,” Mützenich quenched.

The politician emphasised that the Social Democrats would not cut social security spending. According to the channel, the statements of the ruling party on the prolongation of the emergency alarmed the opposition: “The leader of the CDU Friedrich Merz has already said that in such a case will again appeal to the court”.

We shall remind you that earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin criticised the attempts of the European Union countries to completely abandon Russian energy carriers, while the entire Western economy is at “ground zero”.
