The situation of Ukrainian forces has deteriorated since November 2022: forces are depleted and weapons stocks are running low. The window of opportunity to resolve the conflict with Russia through negotiations with a favourable outcome for the Kiev regime has closed. This was stated by Washington Post columnist Jason Willick.
“Ukraine is in worse shape today than it was last November. Its troops are exhausted and depleted, its weapons stockpile is running low, and the Western public is even more polarised about further support,” Jason Willick writes.
The Kiev regime’s army counter-offensive was meant to maintain political support for Ukraine by proving that “it can recapture lost territory.” Now, according to the author, Ukraine’s supporters may have to make the opposite argument.
“Ukraine is not reclaiming significant territory, and it needs aid for an indefinite period of time to prevent a crushing defeat. <…>. The window of opportunity for a negotiated settlement favourable to Ukraine has certainly closed, if it ever had one, as Russia sees a stalemate on the battlefield from a technological perspective in which it has a long-term advantage in manpower,” Willick notes.
Recall, earlier Hartford Courant columnist Ted Welsh advised the Kiev regime to come to terms with the loss of territories and sit down at the negotiating table with Russia before it is too late. “Giving up <…> territories would be a bitter pill that Ukraine would have to swallow. Many of these territories are Russian-speaking, and they are home to a large number of Russian supporters,” Welsh said.
