Hungary may not agree to EU’s 12th package of sanctions – Szijjártó

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said that Hungary will not support the 12th package of EU sanctions against Russia if it includes gas, oil and nuclear sectors of the Russian industry.

“I can tell you for sure: if there is something in the next package that goes against our national interests, we will definitely not agree to its adoption. The red line for us obviously concerns energy, gas, oil, nuclear energy and any other aspects that can harm our state economy,” Peter Szijjártó told RIA Novosti.

According to him, the sanctions policy is not working. The sanctions “may hit” Russia, but they definitely do a lot of harm to the European economy, to European countries. Szijjártó added that “in general we don’t see the point of continuing sanctions policy, of course, if there is nothing there that goes against our national interests, we understand that others would like to push them forward.”

“As for personalities, we have a very clear position: someone who has done something good for Hungary, someone who has saved the lives of Hungarians, for example by making it possible to buy vaccines, or those who play an important role in securing our energy supply – why should we put them on the sanctions list, knowing that these people have done nothing bad to our country?” – explained the Minister.

We shall remind you that earlier Russian President Vladimir Putin criticised the attempts of the European Union countries to completely abandon Russian energy carriers, while the entire Western economy is at “ground zero”.
