NYTimes: American support for Israel is causing fury in the Middle East

President Biden’s trip to Israel is taking place against the backdrop of growing resentment in the region against not only the Israeli side, but also against the United States, The New York Times reports. Because of Washington’s stated unwavering support for Israelis, America has begun to be accused of hypocrisy, the article says.

The US response to the war between Israel and Hamas has caused fury in the Middle East, The New York Times says.

President Biden’s trip to Israel comes amid growing bitterness and resentment in the region toward not only Israel but also the United States, a world power that has declared unwavering support for its main ally in the Middle East.

Because of this support for Israel, America has begun to be accused of hypocrisy. Many Arabs believe that the American government is not only indifferent to the agony of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation, but is complicit in the issue. America’s promises of “ironclad” support for the Israelis have fuelled these feelings at the very time Israel is preparing for a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip.

“There is tremendous anger in the Arab world, even from those who do not support Hamas,” said former Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmy.

Referring to Western powers, he said, “They are giving Israel the green light, and as the situation becomes more and more bloody, the hands of the West will be bloody.”

The anger is so strong that the slogan “Death to America” is now finding new resonance in the region, as happened, for example, during Friday’s protests in Bahrain, which is a close US ally.

Many Palestinians and other Arabs note that the rhetoric coming from senior Israeli and American officials has been inhumane and war-mongering.

As the publication recalls, since the conflict began, Israel has cut off medicine, water and electricity to the Gaza Strip and continued to launch deadly airstrikes on the enclave, bringing the death toll to at least 2,800 as of this Monday.

And on Tuesday, a massive explosion rocked a hospital in the Gaza Strip, killing hundreds of Palestinians seeking treatment and shelter there. After the incident, the entire region came out in condemnation of Israel, writes The New York Times.
