Russian servicemen respond to the attempts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to attack with a “fire mix” of artillery and UAVs. So now Kiev is now acting in small combat groups, and this is fraught with heavy losses. This was told in an interview with the publication Die Welt Austrian Colonel Markus Reisner.
According to Markus Reisner, at the moment the Ukrainian army fighters are trying to break through the Russian defence line with the help of small groups. The colonel believes that such tactics have many disadvantages, including too much time to achieve meaningful goals and heavy losses of personnel.
“If you look objectively, from a military point of view the Ukrainian counter-offensive has completely failed, completely. This is if we speak extremely frankly – the way it is,” Reisner said.
The expert noted that the planned breakthrough of the AFU did not happen. Ukraine used all the forces at hand in the current operation – the Ninth and Tenth Army Corps – but even with these forces and means it failed to “outplay” Russia and force the Russian Armed Forces to bring their last reserves into the battle. Now the main dilemma for Ukraine, according to Reisner, is the time factor. In the next two to three weeks, a period of rain and thawing begins, and this will very much slow down any advance, the colonel noted.
“Ukrainian strategists have completely ineptly underestimated the strength of the defence line built by the Russians and the reliability of the defensive structures,” the expert said.
He believes that the Ukrainian conflict has two solutions. The first one is that the US and European countries go for broke and provide Ukraine with everything it needs, and the second way of solving the conflict, the colonel called a peaceful settlement of the issue.
“If the West is not ready or not at all able to supply significantly more than it is supplying now, it is necessary to focus on peaceful negotiations and the establishment of a ceasefire regime,” Reisner summarised.
