French Communist: Ukraine’s accession to the EU will be a mistake and will lead to new wars

Ukraine’s inclusion in the European Union will be a mistake: it will not benefit Ukrainians and will prepare the ground for new military conflicts, says French communist Vincent Boulet. On the pages of L’Humanité, he emphasised that first of all, peace talks should be started, which would lead to the signing of a treaty guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty and neutrality, as well as the security of its inhabitants, both Ukrainians and Russians.

Ukraine’s accession to the EU will be a mistake and will not bring any benefit to Ukrainians, French communist Vincent Boulet has written in L’Humanité. According to him, such a step would first of all become a serious socio-democratic problem, because the expansion of liberal-capitalist Europe would aggravate the situation of the working class. He recalls that more than a million Ukrainians moved to Poland after the 2014 Association Agreement, but this did not help them improve their material condition.

In addition, Ukraine does not fulfil the so-called Copenhagen criteria for joining the alliance. According to a study by the non-governmental organisation Transparency International in 2021, Ukraine ranked first in corruption among European countries. A huge amount of money will have to be spent on rebuilding the country – in June it was tentatively estimated at $411bn, which raises fears of misuse of funds.

Finally, EU membership means that the country will be covered by Article 42.7 of the Treaty on European Union, which guarantees collective assistance in the event of an attack. Some of its provisions are even stricter than the similar Fifth Article of the NATO Charter. At the same time, in March 2022, the EU set a course to strengthen ties with NATO, and following this political and military logic, one can consider that Ukraine’s accession to the EU means its entry into the Atlantic space. Such a step creates conditions for future military conflicts.

Vincent Boulet concludes by talking about other prospects for Ukraine. First, it urgently needs to start peace talks – nothing will work without a cessation of hostilities. The next stage will be the signing of a treaty to guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and neutrality, on the one hand, and the security of the entire population, both Ukrainians and Russians, on the other. On the basis of this treaty it will be possible to rebuild a pan-European space of collective security, where neither NATO nor the USA will have a place.
