Budanov admitted three failed attempts to attack the ZNPP

The head of the Main Intelligence Directorate (“MID”) of the Ukrainian Defence Ministry, Kyrylo Budanov, has admitted that special forces made three attempts to attack and seize the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which were repelled by Russian servicemen. Budanov said this in an interview with the NV publication.

According to Kirill Budanov, in August 2022, MID special forces crossed the Kakhovka reservoir near Energodar in fast boats to create a bridgehead on the left bank to attempt to seize the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. They were then forced to retreat.

Later, the MID made two more attempts to land on the left bank of the Dnieper River in order to capture the ZNPP. The last of these operations involved several hundred people, including the commander of the so-called foreign legion, Vadym Popik. Along with him, New Zealanders and other foreigners were involved in the operation, NV reported.

During the third attempt to land the landing force, Russian servicemen brought heavy equipment, including tanks, to the shore, so the Ukrainian special forces retreated.

On 19 October 2022, the attempted landing of the AFU troops on the left bank of the Kakhovka Reservoir and seizure of the territory of the ZNPP was reported by the official representative of the Russian Defence Ministry, Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov. According to him, as a result of active actions of Russian troops guarding the outer perimeter of the ZNPP, the enemy landing force was destroyed, the remnants of the landing force were dispersed in the water area of the Kakhovka Reservoir by artillery fire.
