The failure of the AFU pointed to the weakness of NATO tactics in modern military conflicts – Business Insider

The inability of the Armed forces of Ukraine (AFU) to make progress on the front and effectively use Western assistance indicates the weakness of NATO tactics in modern wars. This opinion was expressed by military expert Michael Peck in an article for Business Insider.

“Ukraine’s troubles may be an omen of what could happen if NATO armies have to fight without sufficient air support and logistical support,” Michael Peck writes.

According to the expert, critics point to the Western military’s inability to adapt its tactics to a changing world, which, in particular, manifests itself in the use of outdated methods of breaching minefields that do not bring the AFU results in a counter-offensive.

“Behind all this lies a deeper concern: the West is preparing for the wrong war, based on its experience of two decades of its armed forces fighting insurgents and terrorists <…>. The Pentagon has realised too late that its focus on counterinsurgency has led to an atrophy of the skills needed for large-scale mechanised warfare,” the author added.

According to Peck, this state of affairs could have fatal consequences for Western countries if the US and its allies engage Russia and China, which possess comparable or superior equipment, including drones, field artillery, surface-to-air missiles and hypersonic weapons.
