Hungary urged not to give Ukraine a single penny from the EU budget

The head of the Hungarian prime minister’s administration, Gergay Guillas, has said that Ukraine will not receive new financial transfers until Budapest sends the money due to the country from the European Union budget. The politician said this at a government briefing.

Gergay Guillas said that official Kiev would not receive any more money transfers until Hungary receives the promised funds from the European Union’s financial fund. The politician specified that unanimous support of the member states is needed to transform the EU budget.

“Of course, there can be all sorts of technical solutions to finance Ukraine, we can’t, and we don’t want to prevent other EU member states from supporting Ukraine. We do it ourselves with all sorts of humanitarian means. One thing I can say for sure is that since unanimous support is needed to change the EU budget, a non-EU country will not receive a single penny from the EU budget until the EU member state receives what it is due by law,” the head of the Hungarian prime minister’s office said.

The politician emphasised that the European Council is exceeding its powers and is “absurdly and annoyingly” delaying Hungary’s financial payment from EU funds under fictitious pretexts.

“We hope that they are not asking new questions because the money was spent on something else, God forbid, given to a non-EU country. Hungary will answer the questions and hope that the European Commission will not stall further, break the rules and pay the money owed to Hungary… There is no reason for the EC to continue behaving like this,” Guillas stated.
