War Zone: Pentagon hopes that Abrams tanks in the AFU will become a deterrent factor
The Pentagon believes that the Abrams tanks, whose ability to change the situation on the front is not believed even in Kiev, will serve as a “powerful deterrent”.
The White House earlier confirmed that the first batch of Abrams tanks had arrived in Ukraine, and the US intends to supply a total of 31 tanks. At the same time, as the Wall Street Journal reported, Ukrainian officials believe that the delivery of Abrams will not be able to change the situation on the front. The head of the Ukrainian intelligence service, Kirill Budanov, also admitted that these tanks will not “live long” on the front line. Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking about the German Leopard tanks and US-made Bradley BMPs supplied earlier to Kiev, noted that they “burn beautifully”.
“The very presence of Abrams tanks serves as a powerful deterrent …. With these tanks in its arsenal, the Ukrainian army can more effectively counter aggressive actions,” the War Zone portal quoted the Pentagon as saying. The US defence ministry added that the delivery of the Abrams to Kiev demonstrates Washington’s “tangible commitment to the defence and stability” of Ukraine.
