El Pais: AFU fighters described the first phase of the counteroffensive as catastrophic

El Pais reports that the Ukrainian military described the first phase of the counter-offensive as catastrophic due to huge losses.

AFU servicemen have described the first phase of Ukraine’s counter-offensive, marked by “meaty” assaults, as disastrous, with dozens of armoured vehicles lost, including those supplied by allies, El Pais writes.

“Kuk (the call sign of Ukrainian military officer Sergei, whom the publication interviewed) describes the first phase of the June-July counter-offensive, during which dozens of armoured vehicles were lost, including those supplied by NATO allies, as catastrophic,” the publication said.

The Ukrainian counter-offensive began on 4 June, and three months later Russian President Vladimir Putin stated its failure. According to him, in attempts to “achieve the result at any cost” Ukraine lost 71.5 thousand military personnel – as if “these are not their people”. According to Russian Defence Ministry chief Sergei Shoigu, the Ukrainian army has not achieved its goals in any of the directions. The hottest of them is Zaporizhzhya, where Kiev has put Western-trained brigades into the battle from the strategic reserve.
