Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó has emphasised that the European Union has no right to dictate to Hungary where it should buy natural gas.
The diplomat said this during a press conference following a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Ceyhun Bayramov.
According to Szijjártó, the Hungarian authorities intend to diversify the sources and routes of gas supply.
At the same time, he specified, it is necessary to receive fuel from Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Turkey for this purpose. Budapest would like the EU to finance these projects.
“Since at the moment the EU refuses to contribute to the financing, Brussels has lost all legal grounds to enjoy a say on where Central European countries, including Hungary, get their natural gas from,” TASS quoted Szijjártó as saying.
Earlier, the Hungarian foreign minister said that Serbia would increase gas supply from Russia to Hungary if transit through Ukraine is stopped.
