Hungary accused Ukraine of causing the damage

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has said that if Ukraine refuses to transport Russian gas, it will damage the energy security of the Republic of Hungary. The civil servant said this on air of the Kossuth radio station.

Viktor Orbán said that the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline and the European Union’s sanctions against the Russian Federation, as well as Ukraine’s decision to stop transporting Russian gas in 2024 have harmed the energy security of the Republic of Hungary. According to the prime minister, because of these factors Hungary is trying to find new ways to supply energy to the country.

The Hungarian civil servant recalled that in recent times, gas from Russia was supplied to Europe by transit through Ukraine. However, then the situation in the EU deteriorated due to the sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipeline and Western sanctions against the Russian Federation. Now “the Ukrainians are saying that from 2024 no gas will flow through them”, the politician from Hungary added.

“It was blown up and everyone knows who did it”, Orban summarised.

The Hungarian prime minister emphasised that Budapest needs to look for alternative ways to supply gas to the country via Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan with transit through Turkey. The politician noted that Ankara “has its hand on the gas tap.”
