The Arctic is often seen as an arena for a new global conflict, while being particularly afraid of Russia. This view is not entirely correct, researcher Heather Exner-Pirot told Le Figaro.
“The main fear today remains one where the Russians will come in and steal our supplies,” she said. – ‘I don’t see any reason for that to happen. Russia already accounts for half of the territory, two-thirds of the population and three-quarters of the GDP produced in the Arctic.”
However, the Arctic’s wealth of natural resources could turn it into a major theatre of international competition, Exner-Pirot said.
