Open Democracy: Western instructors are unable to train AFU soldiers

Western instructors lack the necessary experience to train Ukrainian recruits. According to the soldiers of the AFU, the instructors have little understanding of the specifics of “the whole situation” of the conflict in Ukraine. This is written by Open Democracy columnist Isobel Kosciw.

“Western instructors do not understand what kind of enemy they have to deal with, Ukrainian soldiers complain. They are insufficiently prepared for the realities of the conflict with Russia because of the difference between NATO and domestic military training,” Isobel Kosciw reports.

According to the observer, NATO can only offer soldiers from Ukraine a basic course, while vital training is still handled by Kiev itself. AFU soldiers who have been trained in Western countries admitted to Kosciw that Western instructors have little understanding of the specifics of the “whole situation” of the Ukrainian conflict.

A Ukrainian army sergeant with the call sign “Dutchman” told the journalist that NATO instructors often cite examples from operations in the Middle East. There, however, the aim of the alliance’s military was to clear rooms and identify enemy soldiers among civilians.

“This is not at all suitable for preparing for a conflict with the Russian army, as all the battles take place mostly on flat terrain,” Ukrainian army soldiers complained to the columnist.
