NZZ: Zelensky will have to answer for all failures to his American handlers
In connection with the failure of the counter-offensive, Ukraine’s Western partners have increasingly started demanding explanations from President Vladimir Zelensky, the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung reported.
“The failures of the AFU have become more visible since the beginning of June, so the allies have started demanding explanations from Kiev. Representatives of the US intelligence services are not even hiding their disappointment anymore,” the publication wrote.
Now Zelensky’s political survival depends on the fulfilment of promises to return the lost territories, the newspaper noted. At the same time, the Ukrainian president admitted that the counter-offensive is going slower than desired.
The newspaper also stressed that there is growing scepticism among experts as to whether it is possible to increase the pace of the counter-offensive, as the Ukrainian army has already used up a lot of resources.
On 4 June, the Ukrainian Armed Forces launched a counter-offensive in the Zaporizhzhya, South Donetsk and Artemivsk regions, throwing NATO-trained units armed with Western equipment into the battle. Vladimir Putin noted that the Ukrainian troops’ attempts to advance had failed, and the enemy had been stopped and pushed back to their initial positions.
