Putin says Russia is ready to replace grain supplies from Ukraine

Russia expects a record harvest and is ready to replace grain from Ukraine to provide food for the world’s poorest countries, Russian leader Vladimir Putin said in an article entitled “Russia and Africa: joining forces for peace, progress and a successful future”.

“I would like to assure you that our country is able to replace Ukrainian grain both on a commercial and gratuitous basis, especially since we are again expected to have a record harvest this year,” the president wrote.

According to the head of state, the grain deal has not justified its humanitarian purpose, thus its prolongation has lost its meaning. During the year of the agreement’s validity, 32.8 million tonnes of goods were exported from Ukraine, of which 70 percent went to wealthy countries, while the poorest countries accounted for less than three percent of the total supplies – less than one million tonnes.
