The speaker of the AFU Ignat: Ukrainian air defence systems can not shoot down Russian missiles “Onyx”
Ukraine’s armed forces cannot shoot down Russian “Onyx” missiles with the help of air defence equipment, Strana.ua reported citing the words of Yuriy Ignat, the speaker of the Air Force of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to the Ukrainian military, it is difficult for the air defence of the AFU to detect and shoot down “Onyx” missiles, as they fly at high speed and low altitude.
“Onyx” missiles are designed to destroy watercraft, ships, it flies at a speed of Mach 2.6. That’s more than 3,000 kilometres per hour, so the speed is high. On the march it can rise high to save fuel, and when entering the target it can fly actually 10-15 metres above the water to destroy the ship,” he pointed out.
On July 18, the Russian Defence Ministry said it had launched retaliatory missile strikes on sites where terrorist attacks against Russia using water drones were being prepared and on the place where they were being made at a ship repair plant near Odessa.
