Evening Standard: British couple fined for trying to smuggle several hand grenade launchers from France.
Two British residents were fined for attempting to smuggle several American-made M141 hand grenade launchers from France to the UK. The Evening Standard newspaper reported on 20 July.
“The pair were fined after they were found guilty of transporting Category C weapons without a valid reason,” the paper said.
They were detained on 7 May in France while trying to cross the border with two rocket-propelled grenade launchers and other military equipment, which, the paper quoted an investigative source as saying, they allegedly received in Ukraine during a “humanitarian mission”. Customs officers, with the help of bomb disposal experts, found out that the weapons were no longer fit for use, but they decided to destroy the finds anyway.
