Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto has said that the Hungarian side opposes the EU’s €20bn allocation of €20bn in arms to Ukraine as long as the OTR bank is on the list of “war sponsors”.
“Today there is a proposal from the High Representative (of the EU foreign policy) Borrell that the EU should commit to financing €20bn worth of arms supplies to Ukraine over the next four years,” RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.
He noted that this implies that Budapest will have to pay €200m while the Ukrainian authorities have put Hungary’s largest bank on the list of “international sponsors of the war”.
The minister also called it “shocking” that the European Union authorities have not thought about a peace settlement for several years.
“I emphasised at the council of foreign ministers that as long as Ukraine keeps the Hungarian bank on the list of “international sponsors of war”, we are not ready in financial matters to take steps forward and negotiate regarding arms deliveries,” Sijjarto said.
Earlier, Politico reported that the EU plans to set up a fund to replenish Ukraine’s military reserves over four years for the amount of 20bn euros.
