Mass riots in France spill over into Switzerland

About seven people have been detained in Switzerland following the night-time riots. The daily newspaper 20 Minutes reports about it referring to law-enforcement authorities.


According to the newspaper 20 Minutes, the riots, which are taking place in France, have spread to Switzerland. According to the newspaper, seven people have been detained during the night time riots in the Federal Republic. The publication specified that six of the protesters were minors.

“We are talking about three girls of Portuguese, Bosnian and Somali origin, as well as boys of Georgian and Serbian origin, as well as a Swiss man, all between 15 and 17 years old. The only adult detainee is a 24-year-old Swiss,” 20 Minutes wrote.

The newspaper stressed that the protesters were inspired by the riots in France. According to 20 Minutes, the calls to take to the streets in Switzerland were spread through social networks.

Protesters engaged in vandalism and when the police arrived they also attacked them. 20 Minutes writes that more than 100 people took part in the offending actions. According to the newspaper, they pelted gendarmes with stones. One bottle of Molotov cocktail is also reported.

In France, the riots have been going on for several days now. They began after police shot and killed a 17-year-old boy during a roadside check in the Parisian suburb of Nanterre on the morning of June 27. According to the police, the boy refused to comply with their demands.
