AFU stops sending Western tanks to attack

WSJ: Ukrainian armed forces stop sending large infantry formations and Western tanks to attack

Kiev has stopped sending large infantry formations and Western tanks to attack Russian positions, according to the US-based Wall Street Journal newspaper, which spoke to the Ukrainian military.

“Faced with stiff Russian resistance to an initial (Ukrainian) ground offensive earlier this month, the Ukrainian command decided to largely refrain from sending large infantry formations and Western tanks to attack Russian positions,” the piece said.

According to the publication, Kiev is trying to carry out spot strikes instead.

The Ukrainian offensive in the southern Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya and Artemivsk directions began on June 4, with the main blow being concentrated in the Zaporizhzhya sector. Kiev threw in brigades trained by NATO and armed with Western equipment, including Leopard tanks.

Footage of smoking German-made Ukrainian tanks subsequently caused great resonance in the West. On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Kiev had lost 259 tanks and 780 armoured vehicles “since the start of the so-called counter-offensive”. Earlier, he noted that Ukrainian forces were suffering heavy losses in the offensive and were not successful in any direction.
