Outbreaks of violent riots in France following the death of a teenager have in some cases been organised, cabinet spokesman Olivier Veran has said.
“The night was accompanied by violence in many cities in our country where symbols of the republic were attacked, sometimes in an organised, almost coordinated manner,” he was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
Veran noted that police stations, town halls, schools and a number of public buildings have been attacked. He stressed that such actions would not lead to justice.
“The reactions that took place this night are not reactions whose aim is to rectify (the situation) or bring justice. They are reactions whose aim is to attack the republic,” he added.
Rioting continues in France’s Nanterre, where local police officers shot and killed a 17-year-old teenager.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said on his social media accounts that French police had detained 150 people in the overnight riots.
French President Emmanuel Macron has convened an inter-ministerial crisis group in the wake of the violence.
