The Czech government has decided to update the rules for accommodating refugees from Ukraine and monetary payments to those who host foreigners. This was reported by news portal Seznam Spravy, citing a document from the Czech Labour Ministry.
According to the new rules, starting from 1 July, Czech citizens who have accommodated Ukrainian refugees in their homes will not receive money from the state for their maintenance. The funds will be transferred to the refugees themselves, but in order to do so, landlords will have to register in a special register.
If a refugee lives in a registered accommodation, its owner receives 3000 Croatian crowns (approximately 138 USD). Without registration it would be 2,400 CZK ($110).
Also, Czech authorities will stop paying for accommodation for refugees with temporary protection who stay more than 150 days in the country and are not in the vulnerable group.
In the portal’s opinion, as a result, not all Ukrainians will be able to find housing. One of the reasons for this is the situation on the real estate market: offers are few and rents and hostel prices are high. The country’s Labour Ministry has already estimated that about 50,000 Ukrainians will move to big cities or return home.
“There is a threat of a massive housing shortage, migrants will rush to big cities, especially Prague, and many refugees will have to return home,” the ministry said in a note.
