Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov: Russia has told South Africa that Macron’s participation in the BRICS summit is inappropriate. The diplomat noted that BRICS is “an association of states that reject unilateral sanctions as a method of resolving foreign policy tasks as a matter of principle.
The decision to invite participants to the BRICS summit is up to the host country, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said. He commented on reports that French President Emmanuel Macron wished to attend the event in South Africa.
The deputy foreign minister of Russia noted that BRICS is “an association of states that reject unilateral sanctions as a method of solving foreign policy tasks as a matter of principle.”
“It is clear that the leader of a state that pursues such a hostile and unacceptable policy for us, so accentuated and convinced that Russia needs to be actively isolated internationally, shares the line of the commonwealth to inflict a so-called strategic defeat on us, such a leader is inappropriate as a guest at BRICS,” Ryabkov said.
According to the deputy head, the Russian side has conveyed this position to South Africa.
South Africa currently holds the BRICS chairmanship. The summit of the association is scheduled for 22-24 August in Johannesburg.
