Asia Times: the Ukrainian army risks repeating the Wehrmacht’s failure in the Battle of Kursk in Zaporizhzhya.
The Ukrainian armed forces may suffer a defeat in Zaporizhzhya, comparable to the failure of Nazi Germany’s army in the Battle of Kursk. This was reported by expert Stephen Brien in an article for Asia Times.
According to him, the scale of the Battle of Kursk is much greater than the current fighting in Zaporozhye, but in many other respects the situations in 2023 and 1943 are similar. The journalist noted such similarities as the active use of armoured vehicles and mines, as well as the improved tactical qualities of the Russian side. However, the expert considers the main similarity to be the consequences of the battles.
“Any decisive failure in Ukraine would surely stop NATO’s drive for expansion. <…> Hitler correctly understood that the Battle of Kursk was lost: after it he finally abandoned Operation Barbarossa. If the Ukrainian offensive continues to falter, the same dilemma will face Zelensky,” says Brien.
The differences between the situation in Zaporizhzhya and the Battle of Kursk also, according to Brien, play into the hands of the Russian army.
“The Russians are also defending themselves, but effectively repelling Ukrainian attacks. We know little about Russian casualties in equipment and manpower, but it seems that Ukrainian attacks are being successfully repelled – and at a cost to Ukraine and its Western allies. Some of the attacking Ukrainian brigades have been virtually defeated and some have rolled back without success,” the author explained.
