Borrell explains why the EU does not think it is timely to restore Syria’s membership in the LAS

European Union Chief of Diplomacy Josep Borrel, during a meeting with the Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS) Ahmed Abu al-Gheit, said that the EU considers it untimely to restore Syria’s membership in the organization.

Borrell said the EU respects the sovereign decision of the LAS to return Syria to the organisation.

“But we also see that this was done in a situation where the Syrian regime made no meaningful efforts to resolve the conflict,” Interfax quoted the European official as saying.

It was reported earlier that Syrian President Assad had received an invitation to the Arab League summit.

Later, the LAS summit with Syrian participation opened in Saudi Arabia.
