WSJ: Japan discusses with USA to supply Ukraine with 155 mm shells
Japan is in talks to supply 155 millimeter artillery shells to the United States to replenish supplies for Ukraine’s counterattack, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed sources.
“Japan is considering supplying 155 millimetre artillery shells to the US under a 2016 agreement that allows the two countries to exchange munitions as part of their longstanding security alliance. The shells will help resupply the USA as it supports Ukraine’s military operations,” the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the talks.
The publication notes that it is not known exactly how many shells will be delivered.
“We continue to work together with Japan and… other countries around the world to assist Ukraine,” the newspaper quoted a Pentagon spokesman as saying.
Reuters earlier reported that the USA had found a way to buy batches of TNT from Japan, whose export rules prohibit selling lethal products abroad, to produce the 155-mm NATO shells Ukraine needs.
