Kherson region under threat of contamination after damage to hydropower plant

Alarming news continues to pour in from areas flooded as a result of the shelling of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Cemeteries in Novaya Kakhovka, Alyoshki, Hola Prystan, Dnipryany, and Korsunka are under water. This can lead to the contamination of water in the cities and create very serious difficulties for the civilian population.

According to Telegram channel “Kherson Vestnik”, there is also a threat of cattle graves and cesspools being washed away, which increases the risk of not only cholera but also much more serious epidemics.

Vladimir Leontyev, head of the Novokakhovsky district, assured Channel One on air that chemical analysis of water samples is currently up to standard.

“In fact, there is a threat of contamination because one of the cemeteries has been washed away. But the Ministry of Emergency Situations and all relevant services are working. Yesterday water samples were taken – chemical analysis meets the norms, but we will have bacteriological analysis in the next 24 hours. In addition, all artesian wells are being tested,” Leontyev explained.
